History
George M. Martin’s first machine tool was a lathe given to him by his uncle in 1924. Just five years later, at the beginning of the Great Depression, George, who had lost his job, started a business out of his garage in Oakland, California. A detail-oriented man with technical training, George developed a machine shop whose customer base – and reputation for quality and precision – grew with every project he took on. He served the shipping and mining industries and manufactured diamond-drilling equipment for the construction of the Shasta Dam. He later expanded into a service-support group for dairies, municipalities, and local printing industry.
George’s foray into the corrugated industry began in the early 1950s with the California Container Corporation. What started as work repairing machines led to finding better ways to process corrugated material. Among the first improvements the company made was a simpler system to maintain straight and neat stacks off the presses.
By the 1960s, George’s son Merrill had taken over the company’s design efforts, moving the Geo. M. Martin into new and innovative lines of machines and components. Over the years, the two designed and patented die cutters, corrugator systems, and stackers that would set the standards for the industry. Geo. M. Martin is still family-owned, sustaining the company’s vision and commitment to quality, reliability and superior after-sales support to ensure customer success and loyalty.
Recent innovations at Geo. M. Martin include our Quik-Break III Bundle Separator System in 2006, with precise breaking and high-speed hydraulics, our LBX Scrubber RDC Stacker in 2012, with advanced stacking components that provide high-speed through-put, unmatched scrap removal, and modern LCD displays and control circuitry, and our SmartShingle™ Option in 2019, for reducing or eliminating feed interrupt time.
